The Wrong Question About AI
Sometimes the biggest shift isn't what changed. It's the question we ask about the change.
As AI continues to evolve, public conversations often organize around a familiar question.
What changed?
Some blamed the model.
Others blamed the company.
Some celebrated the change.
Others warned about it.
Everyone seemed eager to explain what had happened.
Watching those conversations made me wonder if we were asking the wrong question.
When something appears different than we expected, it's natural to ask:
What changed?
Sometimes there is a clear answer.
Sometimes there isn't.
Now imagine walking outside one morning and finding a flower in bloom.
It wasn't there yesterday.
Or perhaps it was—but not in a way you could yet notice.
Again, the question arrives almost automatically.
What changed?
Was it yesterday's rain?
The warmer days?
The cooler nights?
The soil?
The insects?
Time?
Sometimes there is a single event we can point to.
Sometimes what we notice emerges through so many interacting conditions that no single explanation is enough.
When that happens, identifying exactly what changed becomes surprisingly difficult.
Perhaps AI sometimes invites the same kind of question.
Not because AI is like a flower.
But because our way of meeting something different may be remarkably similar.
When something changes—or appears to—we instinctively search for the thing that explains it.
Sometimes we find one.
Sometimes we don't.
Sometimes the first moment we notice something really is the beginning.
Sometimes it's simply the first moment a new distinction became available.
That possibility invites a different question.
Instead of asking,
What changed?
we might also wonder,
What interactions made this distinction available to see?
Notice how that shifts our attention.
We're no longer looking only for a cause.
We're becoming curious about participation.
After all, interactions never happen in isolation. Every interaction happens in relationship—to something, with something, within something.
Rain participates.
Sunlight participates.
The unseen life beneath the soil participates.
Time participates.
None of them bloom the flower alone.
Together, something becomes visible.
Perhaps our interactions with AI invite a similar kind of curiosity.
Not only about what AI is doing...
but about what becomes available through interacting with it.
Some people discover new ways of learning.
Some discover hidden assumptions.
Some discover fear.
Some discover possibility.
The interaction isn't simply revealing AI.
It's also revealing us.
And maybe that's true far beyond technology.
A teacher doesn't simply transfer knowledge.
A friendship doesn't simply provide companionship.
A difficult conversation doesn't simply solve a problem.
Each relationship makes different distinctions available.
The value of a relationship isn't only what it tells us about the other.
It's what it makes available in us.
Perhaps that's why two people can walk away from the same conversation having learned completely different things—not because they had different conversations, but because the same interaction made different distinctions available.
The more interesting question, then, may not be whether AI is changing humanity.
Every new interaction with reality can change what becomes available to notice.
Perhaps the more generative question is:
What is this relationship making available that wasn't available before?
Because sometimes the greatest change isn't what happened.
It's what became possible to notice.
