What Scientific Inquiry Misses
What forms of participation become available when we organize inquiry in this way?
Science has become extraordinarily good at answering the questions it asks.
What follows is not an argument that science has failed. It is an invitation to notice something its success may have made easy to overlook.
A microscope reveals structures invisible to the naked eye. A telescope reveals distant galaxies that cannot be seen from the ground. An engineer testing a bridge measures load, stress, and deformation to understand how the structure behaves under increasing force.
None of these methods simply observes reality.
Each is carefully designed to make particular phenomena available.
This is one of the great strengths of scientific inquiry. Methods matter because they shape what can be discovered.
But perhaps methods do something more.
Perhaps they also shape participation.
Imagine two biologists entering the same forest.
One is studying fungal networks beneath the soil. The other is documenting bird migration. They walk the same trails, breathe the same air, and stand beneath the same trees. Yet they leave having encountered remarkably different forests.
The forest has not changed.
Their participation has.
Their methods organize what becomes available to notice.
This distinction becomes even more interesting when the instrument is no longer a microscope or a measuring device, but a question.
Questions, too, are instruments.
Like microscopes, telescopes, and load tests, they are designed to make particular patterns available.
They also become part of the conditions through which future inquiry unfolds.
A physician who administers a depression inventory is not merely collecting information. The questions invite a particular kind of attention. They ask the patient to search for experiences of hopelessness, fatigue, disrupted sleep, diminished interest, and other recognized symptoms. Those questions are valuable because they make important patterns available that might otherwise go unnoticed.
The inquiry, however, does not end when the questionnaire is scored.
Before the physician interprets a single answer, the patient has already begun participating in a particular way of noticing. The act of searching has become one of the conditions from which the conversation unfolds. Its effects may extend beyond the appointment itself, shaping what becomes easier—or harder—to notice afterward.
This is not an argument against depression screening.
Nor is it an argument for replacing it with gratitude questionnaires or positive thinking. Those inquiries would organize attention differently, but they too would participate in shaping what becomes available to notice.
Neither inquiry is neutral.
Each cultivates a different form of participation.
Objectivity remains an essential aspiration of scientific inquiry.
The question is:
What forms of participation become available when we organize inquiry in this way?
This question reaches far beyond medicine.
In education:
What kinds of learners do our assessments cultivate, and what kinds do they constrain?
In science:
What kinds of phenomena do our methods make available, and what kinds remain unavailable?
In organizations:
What kinds of decisions do our metrics encourage, and what kinds do they discourage?
In relationships:
What kinds of conversations do our recurring questions invite, and which ones quietly recede?
In personal practice:
What kind of observer am I becoming, and what ways of observing am I leaving unpracticed through the questions I habitually ask?
Inquiry is often imagined as standing outside the world, observing it from a distance.
But inquiry is itself a form of participation.
Every question enters the field it seeks to understand.
Every method reorganizes attention.
Every investigation becomes one of the conditions from which future participation emerges.
This suggests that every method carries at least two kinds of consequences.
It carries epistemic consequences—what becomes knowable.
It carries participatory consequences—what forms of participation become possible.
Scientific inquiry has transformed our understanding of the world because it has developed remarkably effective ways of making many kinds of phenomena available. Recognizing the participatory nature of inquiry does not diminish that achievement.
It expands our appreciation of it.
Inquiry does not merely produce knowledge.
It also produces participants.
Every question changes the field from which the next question arises.
Scientific inquiry has transformed our understanding of the world.
